Crossroads

Crossroads is a disability support program in Brisbane that offers a range of flexible and innovative support options for people with an intellectual disability. We do this through a range of social, recreational, respite and holiday programs that provide life enriching experiences and relationships.

Crossroads was founded over 30 years ago by community members from the Uniting Church congregation concerned about a lack of opportunities for people with a disability. Through their efforts, and the support of the community, a successful service was established.

Today, Crossroads in Brisbane is a program of UnitingCare Community.

Programs

Crossroads runs two distinct programs in Brisbane which both offer wide and exciting opportunities for people with a disability.

Weekday Respite Programs

Our Connections program is about making choices and trying new and interesting activites closer to home. Socialising and helping the local community are included in the various activities mapped out each month by our program users.

The iCan! program has the capacity to provide post-school options developed with individuals goals in mind.

For more information please visit Weekday Respite Programs.

Weekend and Holiday Programs

At Crossroads we realise that sometimes you just need to get away. We support people with a disability to enjoy new and exciting experiences whether they be locally, interstate or overseas through our Break-away weekend events and holiday programs.

Crossroads (Qld) welcomes members from diverse cultural backgrounds, including people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. Eligibility criteria and waiting lists may apply, so please contact Crossroads to discuss this further.

Each holiday is designed to provide a wealth of learning opportunities for its participants.

For more information please visit Weekend and Holiday Programs.

Weekday Respite

Connections Program

Our Connections day activities program caters for people of all ages. Day activities begin at our community centre in Chermside on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. These activities focus on sharing new experiences and learning new skills through community participation. The program is decided by the group members and always offers two different options each day to allow our groups to make their own decision as to what they would like to participate in.

Examples of program activities include - assisting at Meals on Wheels, bowling, movies, BBQs on Bribie Island, mini golf, cooking days, arts and crafts and trips to South Bank.

iCan! Program

Our iCan! program runs every Tuesday and Thursday from 8.30am to 3.30pm. It supports people to gain independence in their own community. Group members plan and budget their weekly activities and all activities are community based. Group members also produce a monthly iCan! activity program.

After Hours Programs

Based on the feedback from families and members, Crossroads also offers after hours activities. Previously these have included activities such as drama groups, fitness programs and film making classes.

The above programs are coordinated by Peter Bill. You can contact Peter on (07) 3350 8500 or xrds [dot] info [at] uccommunity [dot] org [dot] au.

Weekend and Holidays

Break-away Programs

Crossroads Break-away programs aim to provide quality recreation, leisure and holiday opportunities for people with disabilities based on a person-centred philosophy. For members of our program this means:

  • being present and participating in community life
  • gaining and maintaining satisfying relationships
  • expressing choices and making decisions in every day life
  • having opportunities to fulfill respected roles and live with dignity, and
  • continuing to develop personal competencies.

We offer holiday, leisure and recreational activities which range from half day programs to weekend or multiple weeks.

Our Break-away programs are coordinated by Joe Tuimavave. You can contact Joe on (07) 3350 8500 or xrds [dot] holidays [at] uccommunity [dot] org [dot] au.

Get Involved

As a non-profit organisation UnitingCare Community could not maintain our services without the help of our dedicated volunteers and supporters. Crossroads continues to involve volunteers in all of its program areas, which not only provides vital support to our group members, but also creates opportunities for volunteers to learn a wide range of skills and knowledge, as well as develop connections with people in their community.

Volunteering for Crossroads

We're always looking for volunteers of all ages and skill areas. You can choose the program area that you'd like to work with and we'll provide you with the training and support to make sure your time with us is really rewarding.

Volunteering at Crossroads will provide you with the opportunity to meet interesting and inspiring people in a fun, social environment at the same time as becoming involved in your community in a positive and effective way. It is also an opportunity for you to get some quality work and life experience which may lead to further career opportunities.

To find out more information about volunteering for Crossroads please visit our volunteer page or call (07) 3250 1900.
