The Diploma of Community Services (Financial Counselling) is part of the 2008 Community Services Training Package.

Financial Counselling is a specialist service assisting people faced with debt and other financial issues. This qualification may lead to employment as a financial counsellor in a range of organisations and settings.

This qualification is NOT related to the work performed by financial planners or financial advisers whose role is to provide clients with strategies to address their investment option.

This qualification does NOT refer to therapeutic counselling.  Psychological issues, which affect individuals, families and groups such as gambling, substance abuse, child abuse, and mental or physical health problems require referral to a professionally qualified practitioner.

However, a recognition of, and an ability to work within, a counselling framework on the way in which other issues may interact with personal financial issues is highly relevant to financial counselling practice.

This qualification is delivered through distance education to provide flexibility to the training participants who are unable to attend regular training sessions, as well as for participants who wish to work at their own pace within their own time. Training participants will also be required to complete a supervised field placement of approximately 25 hours.
